Irish Washerwoman - Intermediate Fiddle Lesson
Learn to play Irish Washerwoman: www.mytalentforge.com/lessons/irish-washerwoman-2
Irish Washerwoman according to Traditional Tune Archive
Although the tune has popularly been known as an old, and perhaps quintessential Irish jig, it has been proposed by some writers to have been an English country dance tune that was published in the 17th century and probably known in the late 16th century. Samuel Bayard (1981), for example, concludes it probably was English in origin rather than Irish, being derived from the air called "Dargason," or "Sedany" as it is sometimes called. Fuld (1966) disagrees, believing "Dargason" (which he gives under the title "Scotch Bagpipe Melody") and "The Irish Washerwoman" developed independently. "Dargason" was first printed in Ravenscroft's Pammelia (1609) and appears in the Playford's Dancing Master editions from 1651 to 1690, but subsequently the "folk process" melded the strain to other parts, thus making other tunes (see "Green Garters (3)" for example) including the precursors to the Washerwoman tune. One of these precursors was the English tune "Country Courtship (The)," which dates from at least 1715 and probably to 1688, in which latter mentioned year it was first entered at Stationers' Hall. "The Irish Washerwoman" appears to have developed from "Country Courtship (The)," which was extremely popular in the 19th century, as the tune under the "Washerwoman" title was to become a little later. The ending of the jig is the same as the endings of "In Bartholemew Fair" and "Free Masons (1)." Breathnach (1976) finds the second part identical to that of "Star at Liwis or Scheme (The)" printed by London publisher J. Walsh in Caledonian Country Dances (c. 1730, p. 59). The melody was found by the author of English Folk-Song and Dance (p. 144) in the repertoire of fiddler William Tilbury (who lived at Pitch Place, midway between Churt and Thursley in Surrey), who used, in his younger days, to play at village dances. Tilbury learned his repertoire from an uncle, Fiddler Hammond, who died around 1870 and who was the village fiddler before him. The conclusion was that "Haste to the Wedding" and melodies of similar type survived in English tradition (at least in southwest Surrey) well into the second half of the 19th century. Multi-instrumentalist John Rook (Waverton, Cumbria), for example, entered it into his large 1840 music manuscript collection. The jig is played very fast as an accompaniment for Northumbrian rapper sword dancing.

      Hi Phil! What I'm playing here is generally improvised, but there are a lot of phrases, or variations that I have more or less standardized, and play similarly when I play that variation. The sheet music transcription that's included with the full version of this lesson is based off of how I played it this one time. :)

    • @WizardofAdsOnline
      @WizardofAdsOnline 6 місяців тому

      With the advanced lessons, they are more of a slowed down demonstration. I expect that advanced players will be able to learn from a slowed down demonstration. For our beginner, and intermediate lessons, there is much more breaking down a tune to the sections and details of it. Those beginner and intermediate tunes usually also have sheet music or tablature to make them easier to learn.

      Hi Arthur, If you want the full lesson of this tune, including sheet music, you have 2 options. The first one you have identified. For $30 a month, you can access over 700 lessons on the MyTalentForge.com website. Or, if you just want to have the lesson and sheet music for one tune, you can get those for $10 a piece. When you buy a single lesson, your access is not tied to a 30 day time limit. You get it for as long as our site is in existence. My Talent Forge has been around for more than 10 years at this point. And, you are right, we have some lessons that are free, as well. And, it's hard to make living by only giving away music lessons for free. ;)

    Even you played B flat 0:16. Is that B flat or natural? B natural just doesn't sound like it makes sense.

    • @Mytalentforgecom
      @Mytalentforgecom Рік тому

      The tune is in the key of D minor, which means that most of the B's are going to be Bbs. However, there are times where there's a pedal down from a C (CBC) where I will use a B natural accidental. The accidental adds tension. You can play a Bb there instead and it will work OK, but it will be a little more pedestrian sounding.

    May do this! My KUN shoulder rest doesn't extend enough for me - my neck must be long too. I recently ordered a WOLF Forte Secondo rest which is super adjustable - width, angle, height, contour even (you can bend it) BUT it comes with no instructions and it won't stay in place... the 'feet' shape not great... so falls off before I can even get it onto my shoulder. I'm trying to find contact details for the company. In the meantime, I need to practice - so make-up sponges to the rescue?

    • @docwallacemusic
      @docwallacemusic 2 роки тому

      Yes, sponges can help! I use a KUN for my viola. ALSO, please know that it's possible to purchase extra long feet for the KUN. I typically use the normal size for the foot that's closest to the neck and a long for the one that's further away. I use a Wolf Forte Secondo for my violin, but substitute KUN feet. The Wolf shoulder rests allow you to spin the inner screw out, which gives some additional height possibility. It sounds like you need to adjust the metal bar to make the overall width narrower. Here's a link to purchase long KUN feet: www.thesoundpost.com/en/store/accessories/violin/shoulder-rests/kun/kun-accessories/kun-foot-extra-long-4-4-3cm?curr=USD&gclid=CjwKCAjwloCSBhAeEiwA3hVo_XAlG0dq9x8-hTtUR1RK-Xehd94ESNonyY47gjqQQQC2aS5R8WBo_BoCH28QAvD_BwE All the best!

    • @wakingtheworld
      @wakingtheworld 2 роки тому

      @@docwallacemusic Ah thanks for this David. I was actually happy with my KUN rest apart from the height. Got in touch with the supplier (couldn't trace the manufacturer) and my Wolf is now 'operable' but it's still not quite right. Took forever with the differing adjustments and yes, I learnt that its the feet furthest away from the neck that need to be longer. The ones at the neck would be fine with KUN feet. So looking into longer feet would/could solve the problem. Wot a palava... but it has to be comfortable - there's enough aches from twisting my wrist atm.

Once you can play like this for a little while then you can immobilize your forearm so that all of the motion has to come from your hand. :) When you have mastered that, then you are a jedi. ;)
